about

Toronto, Canada - Drega connects with talented producer J. Staffz (produced for G-Unit, Wiz Khalifa, Yung Berg and Joe Budden) to create a song about the immigrant experience.Touching on subjects from racism to seeing snow for the first time, Drega paints a picture of a kid coming to terms with his differences and ultimately succeeding because of them.

Drega told Desihits, where the song was first premiered, "I want to talk about things that have never been touched on in music such as the Desi experience, but I want to do it in a way that's universal and technically savvy".

Currently Drega is in the studio working with Neo Tempus from The Anime Boyz and will be releasing his first single shortly.

The Promise (lyrics)
Written by Drega

I remember way back when I was little,
momma coming home late from Golden Griddle.
She used to be a waitress she worked for a nibble,
we started at the bottom, but we made it to the middle.

So I ain't going to stop 'till the money coming in,
And give it all out, 'cause my wealth is within',
Been called all the names like...where do I begin,
skinny tooth pick, but I never fit in.

So I'm a stand out, and I'm stand up,
and ask do we even really need all this stuff?
Cause we was living fine when we never had enough,
I suppose there's a paradox when you really had it rough.

So I'm a stay grimey, don't believe me try me,
I survived being brown in the early ninties.
So I am feeling like, I can do it all,
Stand 6'1, but now I'm feeling tall.
Cause I was feeling small.

Chorus
And now I'm on and I'm a go strong,
And they gonna throw the ball and I'm a go long,
And I'm a touch down, and everybody roar.
Cause I promised mom that we'd never be poor.
Yeah I promised mom that we'd never be poor. The Promise (4x).

Verse 2
That night we arrived in, it was frightening,
cause up until that point, I ain't seen white skin.
Matter fact, I never seen white things fall from the sky and pile as high to my eye lids.

Snowflakes, yeah I had to have a touch,
but yellow snow, nah I never had for lunch.
Every racial slur inside the back of the bus,
and my name on every one of them I'm screaming out "what?".

Yeah, cause I didn't understand,
so I made them laugh, well at least I can.
Some kids had it worse cause they never had a plan,
got they turban's ripped off just playing in the sand.

Damn.

You wonder why I want it all?
I try to keep my net high like volley ball.
I used to have it real hard like an army arm,
but now everyday I wake's like mardi gras.

Chorus
And now I'm on and I'm a go strong,
And they gonna throw the ball and I'm a go long,
And I'm a touch down, and everybody roar.
Cause I promised mom that we'd never be poor.
Yeah I promised mom that we'd never be poor. The Promise (4x).

I told mom that one day we would live it up,
so that's why I have a hard time giving up.
Got three seconds on the clock, do I shoot or dunk?
I ain't trying to drop the ball, just to pick it up.

Yeah.

So it's got be a long shot and come to think of it, I've always been a long shot.
The train of thought that I'm on got a long stop,
so you better hold on, when I'm 'bout to go off.

Yeah.

Cause I'm tired of warning ya, In my life their's been pain like Foreigner.
I failed math cause I never followed formulas,
so that just mean I ain't never going to follow ya.

Yeah.

Keep your opinions for last or to yourself like an underwear rash.
I used to be poor but that was in the past, now this is my year and that was your last.

Chorus
And now I'm on and I'm a go strong,
And they gonna throw the ball and I'm a go long,
And I'm a touch down, and everybody roar.
Cause I promised mom that we'd never be poor.
Yeah I promised mom that we'd never be poor. The Promise (4x).
